Mobile Device

CHEN-WEI CHIANG

[TAIWAN, 2018]

This artwork originally is a techno theater for Taiwanese traditional aesthetics. Performance takes the form of combing digital technology with stage performance, involving both opera and dancing. Using postures and theatrical elements from Liyuan opera, and leveraging contemporary technology, modern design and the latest costumes, a real person performs side by side and interactively with the digital techno-puppet. One person, the dancer-Hsiao Ho-Wen, and one puppet make up the main characters. Supporting cast is not limited. Onstage stand the person and the puppet pulling each other, presenting their desire to control the other side and making audience subjectively believe that it is the person that is triggering the puppet. Incidentally, however, they also find out that the person is also subject to the puppet – a predicament often at play in interpersonal relations. Behind the images of two pulling each other, the person and puppet become hardly distinguishable. After the sudden death of Hsiao Ho-Wen, the Artist, Huang Wen-Hao, determines to make a new piece of art concerning the digital double of dancer to memorize Hsiao Ho-Wen.

Little Black’s Whole Life in the Factory- Second Episode

[TAIWAN, 2015]

What do laborers who work in factories and out of doors do when they lose their right to employment? How do they maintain a degree of dignity in the shadow of a Capitalist behemoth spewing chicanery and premeditating murder? They can transform into a solemn but efficient flesh-bodied mechanical apparition, or an unemployed laborer who keeps up the masquerade of clocking in and clocking out of work, even when the laboring of his hands are an ineffectual waste of time. They are effectively extorted and endlessly thrashed until utterly mutilated by the co-conspiring power exchange of these perverse institutions. What promises have been kept in the blueprint of a spurious future they were given?

Paths to the Past

ALUAN WANG

PATHS TO THE PAST  [Taiwan, 2019]

Aluan Wang’s «Paths to the Past» features the vicissitudes of his hometown and his wistful nostalgia. What defines home? Geographical coordinate in space? Residence on the census register or the site where your family members have lived for over ten years? Or perhaps the significance of home really shows itself when you are forced to leave your hometown and get into a dilemma. “Paths to the Past”  is a work discussing memory and home. The creator created a unique visual experience by aerial photography and 3D IVR; under the automatic program calculation, the appearance of the work changes in real time, 3D IVR interlaces in turns and the inherent landscape generates unexpected and flowing new appearances. Together with the field recording and granular synthesis soundscape, a strong sense of unspeakable nostalgia for the hometown is presented.

FADING   DIGITAL MEMORIES

Curational  statement  by profesor Chih-Yung Aaron Chiu

It goes without saying that those of us who live in the contemporary Anthropocene period find ourselves in the midst of technology; we might even say that our existence is technologically textured. Notions of technology as those artefacts of material culture that we implement are represented in various ways within our environment, and gradually affect human behaviour, perception and ways of understanding. Among them, “writing” is transformed into a digitally endless text space, speech is spatialised, and a human’s autonomous body is also handed over to automatic digital devices. Thus, we have lost our critical reflective thinking on the techno-system, constructed by human beings, in which we live because technological interventions in daily lives are taken for granted. As Bernard Stiegler has mentioned, we are living in a “timeless era” in which time is still flowing, yet it does not constitute a pure age with heritage. Instead, it is an era that humans have named after themselves, and human activities on the surface of the planet have overlapped with each other in synchronous recursion. It signifies that humans not only dominate the bio-ecology on the earth, but also directly affect the geological time scale of the earth. Within this relatively complex epiphylogentic ecosystem, the industrialization of memories has skewed linear thinking and abandoned mankind’s existing perception of time. Humanity’s system for imagination and also its nervous system are expanding due to the communications industry. New systems are constructed in the world through the use of technology-derived structures, as they dwell in an era where the analogue, the digital and the biological are merged. In other words, humanity’s corporal and perceptual intentionality is being transformed as technology is no longer just an independent entity. Furthermore, a kind of paradox emerges with how people should use their bodies to feel and how meaning could be constructed in this human-technology relationship.
Bearing the aforementioned in mind, the overarching theme of this exhibition is “Fading Digital Memories.”  New generation Taiwanese artists are invited to present their profound observations on humanity and culture in the contemporary digital era. The artists depart from their own individual perspectives to discuss their own everyday conditions, to explore different issues surrounding the core concept of “memory.” By combining physical objects and digital devices with virtual images, these artworks transform everyday objects and rearrange images derived from memories, and ask the question: which memories are real within one’s personal experiences? Recollections for the once prevalent objects produced through massive industrial activities conducted in the not-too-distant past are sparked by these sites constructed using ready-mades and with replicable, referenceable, and repeatable memory-oriented techniques to indicate the Epoch where “the past continues in the future” and “residual memories” and “artificial recreations” are observed. These creations from the era of industrialization not only constitute the present experience with the use of possible visions for the future, and they also pass on experiences from the past, with traces accumulated from the knowledge from the past civilization presented.
