«Mundos»

[2020]

Mundos [Worlds] is a cyclothymic allegory consisting of repeatedly ascending and falling from an empty space, only inhabited by trees that hang upside down. As if it were a mythological punishment, the spectator uses his hands to climb through the Worlds, the history that he traces with his deed. Until he reaches a point where the physical and the virtual collide sensually, and when he falls they cause him to relapse into nostalgia, or melancholy, which he will soon have to overcome.

Alfredo Barroso began his artistic activity in 1999, at the AELE gallery in Madrid, working with elements of light and shadow, such as neon and charcoal, on various installations made specifically for the gallery owner Evelyn Botella. In 2002 he studied video art at the Wimbledon College of Arts and in 2004 he presented his first video installation in expanded format. Since then, he has developed his activity around the graphic three-dimensional image and its animated digital representation, his latest projects being virtual and performative in nature. Doctor of Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and professor of animation at the CES School, he has exhibited at fairs such as Arco or Estampa and participated in various projects or group exhibitions such as “Ten looking for ten”, curated by Iury Lech for the Instituto Cervantes exhibition at Art Beijin 2013, or “ARTEFACT: Chornobyl 33”, as part of a selection of international artists from MADATAC for a project organized by the artist and curator Valery Korshunov during 2019 in the city of Kiev. He was as well part of the catalog and the itinerant exhibition VIDEOsPAIN, designed and curated by Iury Lech in collaboration with AECID during 2015 and, more recently, he received the award for the best video installation during the 10th edition of the MADATAC New Media Festival. In his works he simulates a visual binary language that operates between the perspective (symbolic form of the virtual environment) and the psychological reality (personality) of the viewer. Thus reflecting a metaphysical sphere idealized by technological means that, in its Platonic projection, inaugurates a new era built on the foundations of a virtual reality. Regarding the medium, Barroso contextualizes the digital narrative from a historical perspective in relation to contemporary artistic practice, framing it within those tools and techniques of representation that, in their aesthetic evolution, have sought the precise representation of reality on the two-dimensional surface. In this sense, the virtual reality that he proposes, supposes the historical culmination of an old artistic desire that dreamed of producing the total work of art, but that in the practice of his political reasoning, has been transformed into simulation and synthesis of a reality decomposed into infinite bytes.
