FREAKY BEACH

FRAN LEJEUNE

[Francia-France, 2019]  1’ 43’’

On a beautiful summer day, hybrid and disjointed creatures, with an improbable gait, go to the beach, turning it into a Court of Miracles. The day goes through the nautical activities, children’s games, unions that are formed, to end in tears and regrets.

Based on the text of Hito Steyerl “In free fall”, the video reflects on the perspective as a point of view,  as a power. Steyerl proposes Turner’s «Slave Ship» as an example of destabilization of linear perspective and frontal vision, where the viewer’s point of view sinks into a bottomless sea. Just as the linear perspective was considered as the symbolic form of the modern era, the database could be the new symbolic form of the computer, a new way of structuring our experience of ourselves and the world.

A circuit of interconnected artificial structures howl like wolves, asking to be fed with emotions. Once superposed on the human body, the masks are measuring the emotional status, collecting facial biometrical data and breathing rhythm, hacking the biological system, but empowering the visitor to control a laser light form by means of a collective effort. The user cannot simultaneously control all of them, thus collaboration is required. They need to pay attention to the emotional status of the others, as their empathy levels make the central light sculpture grow and decay, in direct relation to their emotional connection. However, this will not be an easy task, as the soundscape offered to each user is completely different, while some hear encouraging and happiness-inducing sounds, others are subject to aggressive, humiliating words. The installation attempts an analogy between the state of spacetime coherence of the photons inside the laser cavity and human collaboration, while also making a critical commentary on the impact technology has on human behaviour and its capacity to develop a collective virtual mindset.

Ritual Virtual

ALFREDO BARROSO

[ESPAÑA / SPAIN]

2018

Virtual Ritual is an invitation to participate actively in the action of transmigrating weightless elements from an initial physical level to another superior, existing three in total in the scene and being all invisible.
These elements are represented around the user who is in the center of the world, in the form of a macabre altar and in front of him.
However, the binary nature of these, eros (torsos) versus thanatos (skulls), means that when they collide with the environment or between themselves, they represent their opposite. Action that triggers the user when it hits them when moving.
With the VR hand controls, the actor has the ability to manually pick them up and move around the scene. In addition, there are two ways to move: By means of a “teleporting”; action (when pressing the pad of the controls a blue pole allows you to move to the destination), or swinging your arms as we do when walking, pressing (while pressing the buttons laterals of the controls).

It is not a game, but a ritual of infinite time, as much as you want to experience it while it is displayed, and no action on the part of the user interrupts the game engine.
In the end, if the elements ascend in the form of eros, or Thanatos, it will be a question of how the actor interprets the scene, but everyone in the third level would be lost in the dark void if they are pushed to go further, and the ritual It would have ended.

Best of Luck with the Wall (variant)

GARRETT LYNCH

FRÉDÉRIQUE SANTUNE

[IRLANDA-FRANCIA / IRELAND-FRANCE]

2017 / 34h 1′

In Josh Begley’s film, Best of Luck with the Wall (2016), a comment on the proposed border wall between the US and Mexico by American President Donald Trump, Begley states:
“What would it mean to try to ‘see’ the entire southwest border at once? To travel the whole 1,954 miles in, say, six minutes?… According to Google Maps, it would take 34 hours to drive its entire length.”
We wondered, why six minutes? Why should this heavily politicised place, much of which is inhabited and sees a million people officially cross the border every day, be so temporally reduced and become the visual equivalent of what Begley terms is “a place abstracted into a sound bite”? Employing the same tools and processes as the original, this film addresses the issue by providing a slowed-down 34 hour variant. The result is a video that traverses the landscape simulating the experience of traveling the length of the wall as if travelling at the speed of a car. The scale of the proposed construction is emphasised and each place that it will pass through can be seen and identified. The video is accompanied by the original soundtrack torturously stretched to the point of being noise and as a result uncomfortable to listen at length, reminding the viewer of the film’s disturbing subject matter.

Hybrid Sensorium explores the way we sense our body within the physical space and the sensory distortions caused both by mediating technology and direct contact. The artwork is placed in immediate physical contact with the visitor, thus both become vulnerable to emotional contamination. A fabricated structure is superposed on the natural medium of the body, an artificial, permeable membrane that tries to condition our biological needs. The hybrid organism reacts in real time to the rhythm of your breathing and tries to adapt it to its needs, offering digital content in exchange for oxygen. It tests human availability to cede physicality to a constructed environment, while monitoring and archiving the user behavior.
By interrupting the breathing rhythm I wanted to trigger the perception of space as lived interval, suspended reality caused by a syncope in the objective reality. I developed Hybrid Sensorium around innerform concept – a space within, primary state, initial intention that imprints the entire history of a process. I treat form as inexistent in itself, as transient phase of a process, referring to space not as static, but as progression, dynamic content, lived space and time, originating in the interval, syncope, void. It can also be seen as a metaphor of the biological mechanisms of growth and decay inside of a seed, of the perpetually moving point within a process that is simultaneously the beginning and the end of it, scar tissue or material in a state of decay that triggers regeneration.

The participation of Saint Machine in MADATAC X has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

EPHEMERAL TOMORROW (RICCARDO TORRESI, MAXIME LETHELIER, ASAKO FUJIMOTO)

[ITALIA-FRANCIA-JAPÓN / ITALY-FRANCE-JAPAN]

2018 / 34′

When publishing his General Theory of Relativity, Einstein changed the world conception and opened the door to an infinity of new possibilities by arguing that gravity is the product of mass bending space and time. Therefore, when powerful masses in space are set in motion, this causes waves in space- time, which rush through the cosmos at the speed of light and deform all objects on their way, according to their distances. For forty years, astrophysicists tried unsuccessfully to prove the existence of gravitational waves, which until then had only been assumed theoretically. But even if this theory stayed purely hypothetical, it was used as the theoretical basis for astrophysical research.
This situation is very common in physics – theories are put forward that yet have to be proved or refuted. In this process, theoretical assumption and valid proof, genuineness and speculation are constantly competing. Most of the times this concerns cosmic events, which are only perceptible to humans through the use of advanced technical instruments. Only three years ago the existence of gravitational waves was finally proven, with the help of super-detectors at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational- Wave Observatory (LIGO) in Louisiana and Washington.LIGO was able to measure the otherwise barely noticeable changes caused by these astronomical events. In 2017 the scientists Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish were rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics for their role in detecting gravitational waves.
Speculum, the Latin word for mirror, is the root of the verb speculate, which used to mean looking at the stars, and also speculation, the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence. SPECULUM GW170817 seeks to investigate, as well as speculate, around a particular event: the recording of gravitational waves produced by the merging of two neutron stars on August 17th 2017 by the LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston and Virgo detectors (also known as GW170817).
The installation is composed of 3 identical stations, where each one stands for the same gravitational wave recording of 34 minutes from a different observatory. Each station is composed of a cylindrical screen which reveals the beam of a laser placed in its centre with a speaker on side.
The laser beam is put in motion by 2 mirrors, one constantly rotating is shaping the beam as a circle which goes around the screen, while the other one is distorting the circular entity according to the recorded data played back in real time, restituting the distortion caused by the gravitational wave in place of the recording.
The audio is composed by algorithmic transformation using a ionian scale arpeggio, and as the timeline advances, the data generate the timing of the trigger of each note, making rhythmical swings and delays, as well as recreating melodies by the combination of the stations playing all together, giving shifting experiences on regularities of space and time.
Representation idea is inspired by the repetition of natural patterns to underline their distortions. The audio refers to multiplied recurring sounds like insects calls in nature or bells from distant churches, while the laser beams mimic ripples in water crossed with audio waves, both creating meditative states of subtle irregularities in living orders.

LA MUERTE DEL ARTISTA

RAFAEL TRIANA

[CUBA / CUBA]

2018

The Perfectionist

Julian Rosefeldt

[ALEMANIA / GERMANY]

2005 / 25′ 18″

The Perfectionist (2005) is the third part of Rosefeldt’s Trilogy of Failure (2004/2005) in which three different settings draw a picture of our vain entanglement with everyday rituals. In each case the protagonist is caught up in a microcosm that suggests mental and spatial claustrophobia. As a reaction to the hopeless situation, he plunges into permanent Sisyphean activity – going nowhere and producing nothing. The motifs of perpetual attempt and constant failure find their equivalent in the repetitive structure of the loop. The scenes are allegories of our frantic and ultimately futile attempts to escape the surrounding norms, constraints, structures and rituals by which we are determined.
The Perfectionist, in contrast to the protagonists of the first two parts of the trilogy, appears not split in two but rather as three identical configurations of the alter ego. While two of them fail time and again in their attempts to start up a plane or simulate a parachute jump within their own four walls, the third – stricken with doubt – constantly checks and rechecks his parachute, without ever even coming near a plane. The film combines the Sisyphean motif, apparent throughout the trilogy, with allusions to the tragic story of Icarus, flying too high, falling and dying for his dream.

However, the monuments they are scanning are not ancient, but modern replicas. The film walks on the limits between science fiction and documentary to deconstruct the imaginary around Maya culture and their identity today.

A filtered outcome of information’s compression and loss, the point cloud presents itself as an uncertain nebulous mass and gains meaning through its processing. We are invited to navigate through this alien landscape, which is nothing more than a composition of 3D scanned body parts, a digital representation of the physical flesh. Errors and data loss become essential through this process, generating the final distorted landscape of flesh information. A virtual “refraction” of data that questions the way we are and the way we perceive things, as well as the uncertainty of the code and the role of a digital mediator.

If we can access our past at any given moment, to what extent can we get rid of it and look ahead? What consequences do the access to a digital memory have for post-conflict societies? Can a digital memory become a powerful tool to ignite more profound ethnic hate, violence and war?. The unprecedented availability of online databases offering media-based documentation of the past can change people from passive consumers of history to interactive researchers. This creates an interesting scenario because it’s now easier to evaluate and compare contrasting representations of the past but also to create and disseminate fabricated versions of the past with its dangerous consequences.

Stone, paper or scissors, I’m pulsing the system countless times. Pull the lever to see the images that are formed between the stone and the paper, between the paper and the scissors, between the scissors and the stone. And so on in random succession. I have a word for each paper, an image for each scissor and a weight for each stone, but I pull the lever and write you with scissors, I crush you with rice paper and I speak to you with stones. I count to three again: the scissors cuts the tongue, the paper crosses the neck and the stone caresses. And so on in random succession. This I do to mix the words so that of so many possible senses no longer make sense. Non sense The seduction of the nonsense. A kind of drunkenness of chance.

Shadows and Reflections

“Shadows and reflections” is inspired by oldschool special effects technique and questions that have no answer in words, only in beauty. It is about the hybrid language created when classical analog methods and the digital
capabilities combine to create a transposing visual poetry. As we flow through life, and life flows through us, we are but shadows and reflections of our everchanging perceptions. Each animation frame is separate and invisible, a paradox analogous to the our fluid time consisting of distinct, but ever elusive moments. The viewer is left wondering if they are watching a fully digitally created work or not, and it’s this ambiguity the work explores.

The work is inspired by a true story of a dark entity attempting to permeate a golden aura. It is a story about internal and external struggles, the grappling of one’s existence, the indwelling and outdwelling of darkness and the luminous light that prevails.
