Medium Substrate takes a material approach to video, employing ubiquitous emojis from Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Samsung as an aggregated means to rendering the simple gestural interplay of hands. Through this visual substrate, and against a sonic deluge of applause and naturalistic field recordings, the emotive icons lose their pointed instrumentality.

From a footage recorded in a crowded urban environment, fixed frames are regularly extracted and overlaid in the video. As a result, the hybrid image fuses the position of people according to different temporalities: every passer-by leaves a trace of their paths while colliding the static silhouettes left by the others. These improbable encounters materialize a timeless structure that progressively fills the available space: the image is transformed, de-naturalized and tends towards abstraction. Sculpted by time, the produced forms reveal the dialogue between man and architecture that canalizes his movement.

When a person finally realizes his own death, he experiments a desire of an intense and free life, and even more a return to it after death. Here, an object comes alive and follows the states of minerals, plants and animals mimicking our relationship with nature.

The size of the Earth is less than one pixel. Just a tiny blue dot in the black infinity. Pixel is a starting point (a smallest addressable element and fundamental element of digital creative work), and a point that contains everything (the place where everything ever happened to humanity).

Nowadays, manufacturers who carry out programmed obsolescence practices, use raw materials from the Third World at very low prices and then return these materials in the form of hazardous waste. This endangers the sustainability of an already depleted planet.
Every year, solar energy contributes to Earth the energy equivalent to several thousand times the amount needed by humanity. This and other renewable energies should be utilized in order to achieve an ecologically sustainable environment.

Reflection of the anonymous look from an appreciation of the organic vision transformation taken to the future. Taking into account the digitalization and transformation of everything that we assimilate from our organic vision together with technology in its conjugation of sensors, taking our organic visual perception to digits, binary codes and algorithms in order to be able to process, measure and control. Will we be able to process everything we observe and virtually transform our environment as we wish? Will the post-human not only be a human, but a hybrid being by adding technological elements to the organic? It is the birth of a new era… a new dark underworld… opposed to the “fiat lux”.

The reflection on the coexistence of virtual reality and environment, technology and nature, is deployed through the metaphorical units of pixel and flower in an alchemical metamorphosis. When he penetrates architecture of his head, which composed of nine Platonic solids, PIX feels nostalgia for his fluidity. From the water that transformed its state into the bodies of the sculptural cycle, represents the three ages of a flower. CHIQUITA: the morning dew.

Red Werther is a video art project that uses Goethe’s original text and the imagery of romantic paintings as a starting point to show a pathetic character without defined sex or gender, who wanders at his own time and rhythm oscillating between the extreme pain and contemplation. This suffering and non-productive character goes through different situations which represent experiences of the drift of contemporary love: the loneliness, the consumption of bodies the culture of fun/avoidance, the multiplication and surplus of the image. This piece uses contemporary dance and music inspired by the romantic gesture of the 19th century works.

2018 / 3′ 20″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Pablo Jimeno

Fourth iteration of a series of generative audiovisual tests made from the data of the infrared telescope «Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer» that explores, finally, the «monster» hidden in the center of each black hole: the so called «spacetime singularity», which remains a mystery for theoretical physics.

Transnación

MIGUEL ÁNGEL CONCEPCIÓN SANTOS

[ESPAÑA / SPAIN]

2018 / 8′ 31″

Transnationals are the relationships, structures and phenomenons that are defined in their subjects, categories and causes unrelated to identities of the national state and whose scope crosses the boundaries established by the principle of nationality or imagined by nationalism. The transnational occurs above and independently from national borders conquering other nations. The new walls, segregations and geopolitical dimensions have grown into their own neighbourhoods or airports. A social structure that is divided and parceled in the time of the internet: barriers grow and disappear at the same time. The contemporary paradox, the absurdity of evolution.

Sugaring is an ancient Egyptian method of depilatory made out of water, sugar and lemon juice. Different densities of hair and the effect of sugaring on the surfaces are conceptually and aesthetically examined. Using sugaring as a weapon, the body is a war terrain that is controlled and continues to as-/resist change.

Estuaries 3

BRETT BATTEY

[REINO UNIDO / UK]

2018 / 8′ 46″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Bret Battey

‘Estuaries 3′ focuses on spaciousness — longer, more slowly developing audio and visual gestures — and occasionally on establishing a multi-part counterpoint of both events and gestures. A sometimes hesitant, gentle ambiguity occasionally resolves into moments of counterpoint intensity and clarity. The works entail visualizing Nelder-Mead optimization, a process used by mathematicians to find solutions to complex, multi-variable problems that cannot be addressed by solving equations. The music was created with the help of Nodewebba software, which interlinks pattern generators to create complex emergent behaviours.

Sprengung (Voladura)

ALBERT MERINO

[ESPAÑA / SPAIN]

2018 / 4′ 55″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Albert Merino

A fantastic visual story about sculptural symbols and about what would have happened if the history of the country had been different, having repeated the same purges in the Spanish public spaces just like in other European countries at the end of the Second World War.

Supercluster

ALESSIO SPIRLI

[ITALIA / ITALY]

2017 / 3′ 20″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Synth and original elaboration by k137 (Alessio Spirli), Sample “Sound of the Big Bang” by (c) John G. Cramer – 2013

This work is based on the analysis of the «Sound of the Big Bang» created by John G. Cramer, professor of physics at the University of Washington, using data from the cosmic background radiation from the Planck satellite mission of the European Space Agency.
In the Supercluster project this audio becomes a timeline, it will be elaborated through software for spectral Delay, spectral morphing, dilating the sound and symbolically dilating the time space it represents. The sound after processing will serve to animate and modify the 3D images that are an imaginary graphic representation of three Superclusters and their filaments: Lepus-Funnel and Shapley-Lepus filament. The video image is a 3D cloth surface as a pictorial representation of the macro structures of the universe and the time-space in continuous deformation.

Hype Cycle: Machine Learning

UNIVERSAL EVERYTHING

[REINO UNIDO / UK]

2018 / 3′ 43″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Simon Pyke (Freefarm)

Machine Learning is a work of art composed of three short films that questions when machines will reach human agility. This is the second project in the Hype Cycle futuristic films series from the Universal Everything digital art collective which explores human-machine collaboration through performance and emerging technologies. It is located in a spacious dance studio where a dancer teachers three robots how to move. As the skills of the robots develop from unstable mimicry to serene mastery, a physical dialogue between man and machine emerges: imitate, balance, challenge, compete, overcome.

Holy Boulevard

SAMEER TAWDE

[INDIA / INDIA]

2018 / 4′ 00″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Original Sound

Serene utopian spaces are presented as constructed environments in the waters. These structures are built from a highly toxic and non-biodegradable waste: the expanded polystyrene packaging material and styrofoam from large scale trash centres in Dharavi, Mumbai where most of these goods are collected from all over the city and its outskirts. These materials are largely used for the packing of various consumer goods in India and also many other countries. Holy Boulevard is thus a satirical take on the human interaction with the environment.

OUR ALIEN VOICE

DEJAN RADOVANOVIC

[CANADÁ / CANADA]

2018 / 3′ 16″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Michel Banabila «Our Alien Voice»

360° time-lapse video footage filmed during one morning at the Burnaby Mountain SFU Campus which was chosen as a location based on unconfirmed stories of occasional unusual and unexplained occurrences at this location. Film material was treated in post-production based on the Michel Banabila’s composition «Our Alien Voice». The real time of sunrise and sunset (all of the lifespan) is manipulated in all directions and in several layers, emphasizing the unreality of the scene we are witnessing . A tree branch that floats and rotates in the scene in an unusual way represent incomprehensible and unimaginable phenomena in our lives. At the same time, this branch has all the answers to our eternal questions. The scene is set up. It’s all there to find these answers.
