This story is about two teenagers, both nervous and anticipating with such an important event of their age: their first kiss. But this story is not actually about a kissing and especially not about love. This story is about the age when you are not a child, but also not an adult, when you read about the adult world only in books or seen in movies, when you imagine that adult world like it was magic and covered by mystery, but in fact it is only the moment… The moment of farewell to the carefree childhood.

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Christian Zanotto

On a black background an enigmatic figure, which intermittently shows an abstract anatomy, shifts with rhythmic and repeated movements from one side of the screen to the other, almost mimicking the passage of a scanner light during an ideal attempt to detect and measure the extension of the void. The character, in this swinging dynamic, appears to us as an entity of hybrid nature: a human or humanoid body, by the green luminescence and harmonious proportions, intersects with a metallic structure, sort of mechanical / technological skeleton.

Behind closed doors, a woman with no face embodies a serie of threatening sound figures as she becomes the playground and the battlefield of feminine entities. Is she a witch? A spider-woman, a goddess, a she-wolf or a carnivorous plant? And will they triumph over the woman they colonised? The Magma Chamber is a discourse without words, a cry without voice, that tells us the violences and the ambivalences contained in the archetypes structuring female identity.

inSOMNIA

ANA MARCOS

[ESPAÑA / SPAIN]

2018 / 4′ 37″

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Sound of the sea – Ivan Camarés

inSOMNIA gives form to an emotional process inserted in an intimate time, that of insomnia, wakefulness. The images that are united by an abstract narrative show the look of the observer of a hidden, almost impossible process: the self-portrait of the dream. The unconscious mixes with the conscious, interrupting itself, being regulated by the opposites. Recording inSOMNIA in images involves investigating a theater where the dreamer is contaminated by various identities: author, public, actor, also by various scenarios: home, imagined places, hybrids. These elements are represented in the video defining the concept and formalizing the piece. Dreams are the thought during sleep. Unapprehensible activity that we do not see or understand and therefore without concrete purpose. What you think and what you dream mix, articulating a diffuse space around the confluence of body and mind. The unconscious in the dream or the sleep mediated by a technology that allows a confused mixture of dreams and realities, knowledge and longings.

Banda sonora / Soundtrack: CHRISTIAN NIWA / MEMORIE

On the subject of MEMORIE, the artists have processed various images, photographs and animated individual images into rhythmically moving image sequences. The subject represents an essential aspect of the source of inspiration for the transformations into the artist’s architectural visual worlds. The generated sound, which is the result of field studies, controls the 3D animation. This creates the arc of tension in the presentation of the film of 07:38 minutes and leads the viewer to the imaginary and architectural space of perception of the work of art. Memorie represents more than just an aesthetic and technical interpretation of the world. Niwa leads the viewer with his work into a space of audio-visual ideas on the subject of «memory cells», cells as storage of information of a technical and biological nature. He transforms images in the process of pre- and post-processing information into his storage mode. Christian Niwa uses the obsolete term «memorizing», which is used for executing, rehearsing, rehearsing, learning, learning, studying, practicing and repeating in processes of action and change in the human brain, as an artistic element in his artwork. In this creative process he adapts various abstract and representational forms, structures and patterns from nature and technology and transforms them into pictorial information. Moving and coloured images are created on the barrel vault, which are changed by sound and movement in rhythmic sequences and transform the subject of the image sequences in the film.

A praise to nature and an invitation to stop the accelerated arrhythmia of fragmented moments in which we live in the time of internet and the wildest neoliberalism to, in that pause, experience the duration. Stop to contemplate, not as passive relaxation of empty time for the recovery of the productive work force but as an activity that rests and is based on itself, allowing us to fully experience the tiny event that is offered to us from and to the fold of an inflection speculate, free of any narrative imposition, that is, independent of the sense beyond the significant opening that is initially suggested to us in the polysemy of the three words of the title, since from that beginning a significant game is set in which web ‘can refer both to the fascinating geometry of the network woven into the webs and to the virtual networks, both with a friendly face and another characteristic of a control instrument,
domination and surveillance. Jewels intends to interpolate an oblivion in square brackets: every drop of water is a treasure in a world in which ecological deterioration is increasing, desertification advances and millions of people have no access to drinking water. Finally, ‘reflection’ can refer to what is reflected in the mirror [the web encourages narcissism] but also invite us to contemplate and reflect on nature and our own future.

– Cambios asociados a nuestro calentamiento climático.

One Data Day is an audio-visual work using visual artist Gabby O’Connor’s data collection from her residency with the New Zealand Scientific Team in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (2016), in which the team collated and measured ocean warming and ice melting – changes associated with our warming climate. In 2016 O’Connor spent several weeks in Antarctica working in a shipping container laboratory on sea ice 4 metres thick over 500 metre deep McMurdo Sound. While making and researching her art, O’Connor helped world- renowned scientific research team, K131, document ice platelet structures found in these sub-zero oceans.
Using the raw digital data (visual recordings of ice platelets and sonic hydro-phonic recordings of ice cracking / melting and weddell seals) as our basis – Gabby O’Connor (visuals) and Elissa Goodrich (sound and original composition) have created an immersive audio-visual journey beyond the audio visual data of climate change into the mystery and magic of what lies beneath and within the cracking, melting ice platelets of Antarctica.

Es todo lo que tengo para darte is an audiovisual in which, to a music previously composed, I integrate abstract linear patterns whose morphology, size and color evolve in a constant way. They are animated from beginning to end, almost frame by frame, and without cuts in the continuity of the frontal plane on a background of colors with variable opacity. At the rhythm of the sound, with a synchrony, also appear spiders, beetles, crabs, butterflies, bats: photos of taxidermied specimens that I shot at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Mar del Plata, the most iconic seaside resort in my country, “animate” with the music. Organic and dynamic shapes, bright and cheerful colors, dead and still beautiful “bugs” come back to life, rhythmic and emotive music. It was a long and complex audio and video editing process, with weeks of experimentation and adjustments, so I felt that at that moment it was all I had to give.

Close-up shots of two veiled mouths perform an opera duo in lip-synch; however, the piece of music has been substituted with a contrived and out of tune soundtrack. This suggests an off-screen setting firmly fixed in the materiality of trivial actions and manipulations. This incongruous encounter presents the body in all its strangeness, exposing what exceeds and overflows from a conventional image when the echo of a dissonant voice resonates there.

THE CAGE

MARCANTONIO LUNARDI (Italia / Italy)

2016 / 05’46’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: The Cage

Comida, agua, libros, lenguaje, belleza, tierra, mar, amor, calor, hombre, mujer, deseo…

Food, water, book, language, beauty, earth, sea, love, warmth, man, woman, desire. What is our cage dividing us from? Is it blocking us or is it protecting us? The barbed wire is a simple structure, a cylinder-shaped object deformed by a light twisting, which stretches, in the room, from one point to another. Every 10 centimetres there is a small lock: its delicate shape breaks the linearity of the barbed wire like a lock gracefully curled. The barbed wire, thus, marks the border between existing a non-existing, between living and non-living, between being seen and being invisible. The cage envelopes us with its barbed wire from our innermost roots, dragging us in the shadow. This work introduces the solitude imposed on us by the cages we are living in. In the typical style of Lunardi, the work has been built around some tableau vivants which represent, through the body of the actors, some of the conditions which we experience on a daily basis in a society which is pervaded by egoism.

SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS

YAGAMA JOGMAYA (Bulgaria)

2017 / 7’ 14’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Dirk Markham

“Shadows and reflections” is inspired by oldschool special effects technique and questions that have no answer in words, only in beauty. It is about the hybrid language created when classical analog methods and the digital capabilities combine to create a transposing visual poetry. As we flow through life, and life flows through us, we are but shadows and reflections of our ever- changing perceptions. Each animation frame is separate and invisible, a paradox analogous to the our fluid time consisting of distinct, but ever elusive moments. The viewer is left wondering if they are watching a fully digitally created work or not, and it’s this ambiguity the work explores.

RE = 2300: NÚMERO DE REYNOLDS IGUAL A DOS MIL TRESCIENTOS

CONSTANCE PINHEIRO (Brasil)

2016 / 1’ 10’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Constance Pinheiro

Re=2300 is a video in color and digital format.. This work emerge from experimentation through appropriation of a recorded scene from a traffic camera, where a biarticulated bus and a car collide, and both react in an unforseen way, heading into pedestrians, traffic signs and other vehicles, putting in danger an important cross of Curibita/PR/Brasil. The collage of the work its among montages of this scene and another one, this time recorded by the artist, about aquatic beings; and among the videoaural interactive and the sounds from the soundtrack. The audio processing has been made thoroughly, to create a new visuality beyond the one that appears in first place. The sounds used in this work has been recorded by the artist with a mobile recorder, and other ones are appropriations from a sound effect database.

The music was created with my Nodewebba software, which interlinks pattern generators to create complex emergent behaviours.

END LIGHT

COLLIN BRADFORD (EEUU / USA)

2016 / 11’06’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Sam Richards

End Light is both a single-channel video and a hybrid video and sculptural work. The video was shot in a massive automated library storage system, in which books are retrieved by a robot crane. A man who is captive in a room above this vault receives communication only via books that his son requests that the crane deliver to him. He finally escapes by riding the crane into the heart of the vault. These work explore a cultural shift, accelerated by globalization, technology, and the internet, from the Enlightenment project’s collection and hierarchical categorization, organization, and storage of knowledge via science, math, and reason to the rhizomatic dispersal of knowledge and the breaking down and escape from rigid hierarchies and organization.

LA REINA DE LA CASA

ISABEL PÉREZ DEL PULGAR (España / Spain)

2017 / 06’25’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Various artists

It is a composition of many. The one who appears to be, the one who believes to be, the one who lets it be, the one who wants to be, the real and the apparent. Dichotomy, dystopia, utopia. The feminine identity between chaos, doubt, imposition, obligation, guilt, norm, rule, reification, stereotype, nature, artifice, lies, duty, education, sex, gender, archetype, silence, violence, body, fear, inequality, hope, dream, desire, nightmare, time…«The body has been a space in which power transits (M. Foucault) is the space of the symbolic, it is a hinge between the social and the psychic, it is the meaning and constructor of an identity, expression of a construction of gender in a Specific culture (Judith Buttler) therefore a way of placing ourselves before the world as political bodies refers to a substantial corporality «

BURDEN OF TRADITION

JEREMY BLINCOE (Australia)

2017 / 2’ 18’’
Banda Sonora / Soundtrack: Jon Perring

No organized religion has escaped the temptations of wealth. Judaism, Islam and Christianity all drip with gold, at least in their upper echelons. Jeremy Blincoe’s extraordinary video work Burden of Tradition could well be a dramatic illustration of this bane. A richly attired priest-figure stands, at first in silence in the beatific embrace of nature in a pose reminiscent of Bill Viola’s famous 1996 work The Crossing. But as the minutes tick by a deep rumbling sound emerges, a portent as coins begin to rain down, eventually becoming a bruising, crushing torrent.

VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH

MARKO UBOVIC (Serbia)

2017 / 7’ 33’’
Banda Sonora / Soundtrack: Ambient Sound

The work Valley of the Shadow of Death is based on a photograph with the same name, taken by Roger Fenton in 1855. The syntagm Valley of the Shadow of Death can be found in the twenty-third psalm of the Bible. There are two versions of this famous photograph on war (one with some cannonballs on the road and the other one without them), which leads us to question the authenticity of one of the pictures and to think about a photographs impact on the conception of a distant or past reality.

The work is trying to understand the multilayered dimension of this war photograph(s) and to contemplate the consequences of wars in general and an artist’s role in this world.

GWENDOLINE POUCHOULIN (EEUU / USA)

2017 / 07’52’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Sam Richards

Sweet and sour vibes are floating in the air. Nostalgia of the end. Thrill of a grand beginning. Any world having faced the threshold of major transformations knows the feeling. Here, resonance echoes transmutation. Resonance is the building block of the Multiverse, and whenever it is played with with focused intent and a deep sense of balance, harmony can be restored. It is unfolding even as we speak.

EPHEMERA NO. 1

WU SIOU MING (Taiwán / Taiwan)

2017 / NA
Banda Sonido / Soundtrack: Sound controlled by real time programme

Ephemera is a quasi-biological audio-visual that is operated by a real time program. It uses recorded wave sounds as sound sample, calculating a kind of natural model and controlling the quasi-biological body, and the dynamic of moving back and forth.

The concept of this work is based on an environmental element, to re-analog the natural form through the computer program, provoking thought about the relationship between civilization and nature. The origin of life may be regarded as some kind of the most cutting-edge technology, and technological progress may only try to approach some kind of original nature.

CRONOS

DUYGU NAZLI AKOVA (Turquía /Turkey)

2016 / 3’ 20’’
Banda sonora / Soundtrack: Ambient Sound

Cronos, takes a look at the unplanned urbanization, which has been paraded under the guise of “urban renewal”, Istanbul has been undergoing for many years. This unplanned urbanization creates mega cities made out of concrete, by destroying the existing historical and cultural legacy. Today, Istanbul has become a giant construction site where the terrifying reflections of the applied migration and urban politics can be seen through the disappearance of ethnic identities and the gap in the living conditions of individuals. In the video we see Istanbul’s two different settlements together in the same frame with different temporal variations. In this sense, “cronos”, focuses on the issues such as immigration, human rights, social inequality and urban renewal through their social, cultural and economic outcomes.

INDICIOS

LAURA & SIRA CABRERA (España / Spain)

2017 / 06’59’’

Someone wanders through space and time looking for a new way of relating to the world. It is a woman with automated, multiplied, divided and ubiquitous movements, who walk without progress, in a broken time and impossible, contrasting and opposing spaces. All synchronized by a music that directs the events. Signs of something that is going to happen? Paralelamente proposes to us to look for a new role for the human being within the universe. Stop exploding and destroying life on the planet, to empathize and immerse ourselves in Nature as one among all beings.

Technically, the images are formed by superposition, mixing the different layers with the following events, forming spaces, times and movements choppy and strange; with changes of size, drawings interspersed in different depths, inversion and division of the image; starting from own films obtained from reality and from models made for this purpose.
